Circle of Life?

In the aftermath of the shotgun death of a Wampum, PA woman by the 11 year old son of her boyfriend, there was a soundbite from Cornell University Environmental Philosophy professor Jim Tantillo who quipped, "Life exists at the expense of other life. You have to kill in order to live."

Pretty universal, a rule that applies even to vegans who have to uproot plants for consumption. The rule was mentioned in the 2002 book, "The Everlasting Stream", a memoir about rabbit hunting (you non-readers rejoice: there was a 2007 PBS documentary related to the book).

As a Lover-Not-A-Fighter kinda guy, I'm haunted by that quote I read in today's paper. I do fish, kill, and eat all manner of oceanic life, so maybe I'm in denial about the blood on my hands. What I do know is that killing a mammal is, for now, my line in the sand.

Really, a bottle of Salad Dressing?

take a look!!!

I'm getting rid of this because, like the backwards message on Abbey Road says, "Paul is dead". I think I can forgive him for this label. That doesn't mean I can't sell it! To be fair, he also did pastiches of Mexicans, Romans, Russians, and cowboys.

The thing is.....

I've been culling the many books on my bookshelf, looking for items to sell on good ol' eBay. Cookbooks are going to be the first to be thinned out. This was an easy task, or so I thought.

This oldie was purchased at an old bookstore back in '88, when I was on this quest to collect every single Chinese cookbook from the 50's and 60's. I was about to put this up for auction, when I read the introduction.....awww mannnn! Who woulda thought? I guess I can hold on to THIS one!

Yat Gaw Mein recipe #1

So, here's what you do:

Ingredients:
whole wheat noodles (one serving)
two cups vegetable broth
1/4 cup onion, cut into rings or slivers
1 or 2 nickel-sized ginger slices
1/4 lbs. raw shrimp, peeled
one hard boiled egg
optional: ketchup / catsup

1. Cook noodles til desired consistency; remove from water, rinse in cold water, place in a big serving bowl.
2. Heat vegetable broth in a saucepan, and add onion and ginger. Bring to a boil.
3. Add peeled shrimp, and allow broth to cook until the shrimp turn white-ish pink.
4. Pour saucepan contents into bowl of noodles.
5. Slice the egg, and strategically place on the surface of bowl.

In my experiences, 74 percent of people I've encountered prefer dollups of ketchup added to the soup before eating.

Credo

What is Yat Gaw Mein? It's a one-dish bowl of noodles and some meat and seasoning, plus a hardboiled egg and some catsup. This site will be a dumping ground of photos of stuff I'm selling, excess junk I need to let go off, and ephemera.

Tomorrow: A thrilling recipe and things to sell!
